Is your personality the key to your eating?While I believe the key to each person’s long-term weight loss success is related to learning new behaviors, I have often wondered if some personality traits cause a predisposition to eating. Meaning, throughout my life, I have often had what is considered an “all or nothing” personality. With most everything that I did in my life, I had no ability to apply moderation. In many ways it was a huge asset, but in others it was a complete mess. For instance, as my former self, when I gambled, I did it big. I would roll the dice and not stop until my name was on the Casino (hasn’t happened yet). At Christmas time, I just didn’t put up lights; I would light up the house like a NASA landing strip. In business, working, drinking and eating, the more the better. In fact, when I was larger and I saw another large person, I didn’t look at them as being over weight, just committed to their eating program. That was something that I could respect!!! As you can imagine, this list of craziness went on and on. So, for me, losing the weight was not just about getting thinner, it was about coming to terms with my own behaviors. I had to learn not only moderation in my eating, but also moderation throughout my life. And, in doing so, I can assure you that life is much more enjoyable.
